Shortlist for week ending 19th September 2008

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

The next Post Of The Week will be announced on Sunday evening.
Please note that nominations for next week cannot be accepted until then.

If YOU would like to vote on this week’s shortlist and be part of the decision making for the Post of the Week this week, please pick your 5 favourite posts from the list and award them 5 points for the favourite, down to 1 for the 5th favourite and mail your votes to bob[AT] bobzyeruncle [DOT]com no later than 6pm on Sunday night.

1) - The Anchored Nomad with: I’ll Be Your Candle on the Water

I think she’ll do the political equivalent of making sure that every square inch of the gym is covered in alternating pink and black crepe paper strips at 3 a.m. on the eve of prom night. It’ll be ugly, but it’ll be the design she insisted on, and definitely better than no decorations at all. She’ll stay up all night memorizing all the answers to the test even if she fully admits she never read the book.

Nominated by Mike

2) – Bill Stankus with: Hollywood Boulevard

You know me, I don’t show stuff, Mr. Ice Water, right? Anyway, I gathered my wits and I took a good look at the crowd around me, I guess partly to see if what I saw was real. It was. The crowd was in a weird kind of silence, a few sobs and lots of heavy breathing. But down on the asphalt, in the crosswalk was this guy

Nominated by Misssy Martin

3) - Celebrity Litigation with: Clarkson on The Credit Crunch

It seems that all anyone talks about these days is the Credit Crunch, this big financial crisis that looms over us all like Godzilla in a cheap Japanese movie. So, in my capacity as world-leading financial guru, I have created this handy “cut out’n'keep” guide.

Nominated by Misssy Martin

4) - Dulwich Mum with: Tragedy

I read in one newspaper that pedigree pooches are being delivered by the cab load to Battersea dogs home. All across Dulwich, Swiss balls are being deflated and hurled into garages and there isn’t an Ocado van to be seen anywhere! Some mums may just end up going to Iceland (not this one - clearly).

Nominated by Bob

5) - Lyle (no longer part of POTW Team so now v eligible for nominating!) with: Vindication

Sometimes (as I’ve said before) you get a customer services call, and you just know that it’s going to be fun. (You may also want to hover over the links to see the full URLs for them. Up to you, of course.)

Today’s example:
“Hello, is that [Lyle]”
“Yes”
“A couple of weeks ago, you called Anglian Water. Do you mind answering a few questions about that?”

Nominated by Daisy

6) Overdressed and Underpaid with: Shame

As with many of the incidents that sneak up on me when I’m trying to go to sleep, filling me with so much horror as I remember them that I have to stuff my duvet into my mouth to stop myself from screaming, I was very drunk when this occurred. I’d just started sleeping with a bloke in my friendship group that I’d fancied for ages, we’ll call him Travis, and was in the pub with him and some others.

Nominated by The Telf

Post of the Week #85

Sunday, September 14th, 2008

The race was neck and neck up to the finish, but we’ve consulted the video-tape replay and we have a winner.

This is This: Karma Comedian
nominated by Katy Newton

“A couple of weeks ago I went to a temple (click photo for larger pic). I stuck some money in a prayer box there. It might not be called a “prayer box”, but what do I know? I took a piece of paper out anyway and took off the rubber band to reveal an awful sight.”

Happy voting.

1. Life in the Grey Area: Hello Again
nominated by TheTelf

I cried when I opened my Christmas presents because he had bought me a book. Not just any book, it was a book I’d looked at a couple of months previously but hadn’t purchased because I knew with the upcoming birthday of our son and Christmas meant that we couldn’t really afford it. I was deeply touched, for the first time since we had become a couple he had really noticed me and I can only say I fell in love with him all over again at that moment. A week or so later he was gone and I was numb.

2. This is This: Karma Comedian
nominated by Katy Newton

3. Uncouth Heathen: Meet my Mom and Dad
nominated by XUP

This will be short because my parents are shy and they don’t like the idea that I might write about them on the Internet, spilling our family secrets, like that recipe for spaghetti and meatballs. It’s hard for me not to share something about them here, considering they are such a huge part of who I am and what I hold dear. So here we are, meeting my parents.
