Growing Up With A Disability: Sandbox Lessons

Some stiff competition among the shortlist this week (and even to get into the shorlist; there were some pretty good nominated posts that missed the cut altogether)… but I think the judges have made a wise choice. It is only on re-reading that I have fully appreciated the artistry employed here- and in particular the economic but empathetic use of multiple perspectives, through which the writer builds upon a seemingly trivial incident from his childhood to make an invaluable point about society’s attitudes to disability.

Children may not be born racist but they are born competitive, differentiation is part of competition, don’t buy the innocent child stuff. Accepting and appreciating and enjoying difference is not lost innocence but part of the growt to maturity
