Marcos delivers again. Bastard! We were going to do something rather similar, but he’s wiped the ground from under us. Yet again. *Sigh*

A post from The Girl with a One-Track Mind about her frightening encounter with a pervert: (graphic at times but utterly honest)

  3. Mike

    hellojed beat me to it…

  4. Peter

Saltation’s trip to Scotland. Got pictures. Mentions me. Enjoyable. What more could you ask?

  5. Peter

You could ask for the URL perhaps:

    Sconny Botland

  6. Mike

    David Belbin: Leaving Led Zeppelin.

  7. enidd

second the nomination for edvard. cracking stuff.

  8. fionat

Oh, just dropped by to nominate Edvard. Well. I’ll get me coat so.

  9. An Unreliable Witness

    Okay. Deep breath.

I know it’s been mentioned before how nominated posts should be primarily text-based, but it seems to me that with more and more people doing entries that, say, involve text but also images (I can think of a number in just the past couple of weeks, and no, I’m not just talking about my post-it notes - I’m not that self-centred, really) the rules ought to be looked at again to see if such posts might be included.

So having given that long preamble, I nominate Andre’s And I Wait For You from A Beautiful Revolution. Because it’s utterly beautiful.

Include it. Please. You know it makes sense.

  11. Mike

Nice try, Mr Witness - and, as ever, people should feel free to nominate absolutely anything they like, regardless of any rule book - but this subject has already been discussed amongst the POTW team members, and the consensus was that we should stick to our (cough) Core Mission:

    1. To highlight great writing on personal blogs.

The post to which you refer is, indeed, an awfully good one. But we shan’t be seeing it on the shortlist.

  12. Clare

Um, I would argue that Andre’s post is primarily text-based. It’s presented in a way that gives the words even more power, but it is the words that pack the punch.

Therefore I think it should be allowed. What’s the rule? Primarily text-based? Well, surely that post is?

  13. Mike

Has anyone actually read the rules recently?

If they have, then they’ll spot an interesting loophole as regards Andre’s post.

Oh Gawd, I feel a group e-mail coming on this evening…

  14. An Unreliable Witness

Yes, that’s partly why I thought to nominate Andre’s post (apart from the sheer quality of it). It is neither audio, nor photographic, nor video. It’s artwork (I wouldn’t call it a “doodle” in this case). It’s also a primarily text-based piece of artwork.

I must confess that it does seem to me, in the age of a multimedia web where text - even on blogs - is being joined, if not usurped, by other forms of media, to pursue a purely text-based agenda could be rather limiting. Just my opinion, of course.

And bear in mind that I speak s someone who can’t take pictures, can’t draw, and breaks out in a cold sweat if something doesn’t involve text, text and more text. So if anything I should be even more biased in favour of words.

  15. Angelalala

Audio posts, video posts, or purely photographic posts

Please Sir, is it that the rules don’t specifically preclude felt tip pen posts?

I would agree with Clare that the words are what matter in this case. Certainly it wasn’t a picture of a brick wall that brought tears to my eyes.

  16. Ciaran

I’ve been lurking on his site for some weeks and finding the writing thought provoking, beautifully written. Unsent letter no5 by unreliable witness

  17. Peach

what if andre and unreliable had babies together?

  18. Lesley

I’d like to nominate this post by Lucy at Box Elder:
    http://box-elder.blogspot.com/2007/04/foals.html

  19. patita

The Restaurant Gal’s “Unintentional Adultery En Route to Work” is definitely worth a peek (and how could you not with a title like that?).

  20. Zinnia Cyclamen

Death and Coincidence by GrannyP here http://www.haloscan.com/tb/gra.....785593066/ - a stunning post, and 100% text ;-)

  21. Betty

Vicus Scurra, miserable old goat: http://vicusscurra.blogspot.co.....quare.html

  22. Mike

Zinnia, you’ve linked to a comments box!

  23. Zinnia Cyclamen

Oh I Am So Rubbish!!! Sorry, everyone. I’m amazed I manage to run a blog… go here http://www.grannyp.blogspot.com/ and find the post called Death and Coincidence, it’s at the top of the screen at the moment. If anyone can work out how to link to the post itself, that would be helpful. Sorry. I just tried right-clicking on the trackback thingy again, to copy the shortcut, but it came up with the same one as before. It’s a tremendous post, honestly, it’ll be worth the effort. I will now go and stand in the corner. Sorry.

(And then I tried to post this comment without filling in my name and email address. Never mind standing in the corner, maybe I’ll just go and shoot myself.)

  24. Mike

Aha, this is one of those Blogspot blogs where the permalink is cunningly disguised as the time that the post was made. In this case, it’s:
    http://grannyp.blogspot.com/20.....eting.html

  25. Clare

    Bless ‘er.

    [gives Zinnia a hug]

  26. Peach

I nominate The Kidnap of Queen A. Jordan:

    http://www.abeautifulrevolutio...../help.html

all in words, no pictures and unless he wins, he may never be released…

  27. An Unreliable Witness

We need people who have the nerve and the couldn’t-care-less-about-what-people-think attitude to post the raw contents of what’s going on in their head. Thank [insert swear word] for The Overnight Editor and LIAR then. Christ, I wish I had even half the nerve to write like that.

  28. An Unreliable Witness

And rather more elegiac than Overnight Editor’s post, but no less an example of why we need bloggers who post what is true to them and don’t give a [insert another swear word here], I would also like to nominate the beautiful words about words that is See Through, by Absolutely Miles Away.

  29. Zinnia Cyclamen

    Thanks, Mike; thanks, Clare. :-)

(er… I’d run out of bullets?)

  30. Timbo

    Clare’s Our Day Out.

  32. overnighteditor

    Tough week this.

  33. Mike

Just to let you know that the post from A Beautiful Revolution has been deemed admissable by the team, as it contains text.

  34. Mike

Correction: both posts from A Beautiful Revolution. As one of the team members said:

“Look - if it wasn’t for writing on bricks we wouldn’t have the Ten Commandments, and then where would we be, eh? People dishonouring their fathers and mothers like it was going out of fashion.

It’s within the rules. Let it be, as the husband of a one-legged pornstar once sang, somewhat tediously.”

  35. Nick

To quote the “Witness”, we need bloggers who post what is true to them, and have a good go at shattering taboos at the same time:

    http://fromfuckuptofab.blogspo.....minus.html

    and of course:

    http://www.claresudbery.purple.....y-out.html

  36. andre

As with every Mr Unreliable posts. It is always about the words.

    http://www.unreliablewitness.c.....titlement/

  37. An Unreliable Witness

Mike - regarding Andre’s posts, I am very glad they have been allowed in. Is this a permanent change to the rules to reflect posts that are primarily text-based even if they are not literally text in print? Will the rules be changed to reflect this?

With that in mind, and in such a great week for posts, I would like to nominate DIY Pandemian by, er, Pandemian, featuring such marvellous words as ‘futtock’, ‘cuntacular’ and ’slatternly’.

  38. Timbo

My second nomination goes to Geezer for hitting the nail on the head yet again.

  39. Mike

We’ve decided that the rules are OK as they are, i.e. there’s nothing there that excludes text-based graphics. But the “Core Mission” of POTW still stands: To highlight great writing on personal blogs.

  40. Penny Morris

I’d like to nominate ‘A Punk Romance’ as post of the week:

  41. Edvard Moonke

if this is not writing of the highest order, then what is? my heart is still beating faster after reading it.
