Paul: Kinda Rough
It was an agricultural community to start with. My first generation dad would point out with disgust how whatever new shopping center or paved roadway used to be Gundersons’ farm or Bardo’s dairy pasture and what a shame they sold out during the depression. Or Nokamura’s radishes, or Watanabes’ celery field, and how they’d lost their land during WWII. Of course , they had to go. They might have been spies and helped the enemy. You couldn’t take chances back then.
Our Judges said:
“I liked the simplicity of this post and how it addresses the complexities of the situation within. Paul’s short, yet heartfelt journey of boxed-up memories and emotions reminds us of the conflicts we each find in our family histories, and perhaps hanging on our walls.”
“This writer takes a family secret and deftly moves the personal to the universal.Internment camps are North America’s shame. We don’t like to talk about them. ever. There are no superfluous words here, which makes the return of a family history all the more potent.”

This is a suprise!
Thank you to the judges, and thank you to whoever nominated me!
Paul: the post was originally nominated by Betty.
Um… I think something’s wrong with the site?
All the nominations for this week seem to have disappeared? All I can see is the shortlist.
That’s the way it’s designed to work, Clare. The nominations close on Friday night, and are replaced by the shortlist until Sunday night, at which point nominations re-open.
How many Nominations were there for POTW which closed last night?

I may have PC problems….
Oh!
But why can’t I see the archives?
I never manage to look at the nominations during the week - I only get to catch up at the weekend, at which point it’s nice to be able to look at all nominations for the week. After all, just because the judges are only considering the shortlist, seems a shame to prevent anyone else from seeing the other nominations? Particularly as it means if something is nominated on Friday afternoon and then doesn’t make the shortlist, chances are nobody’ll ever see it?
Scrap that, I’ve thought about it and I can see that you have to remove the nominations thread, or people would still be trying to nominate (although I spose you could always just disable comments on that thread, but that might be an extra piece of work for someone, and I can see how you’d want to keep tasks to a minimum).
When the nominations box re-appears tomorrow, there will be an “Archives” link at the top. Click it to see all the nominations from previous weeks.
The nominations box is only replaced by the shortlist for 1.5 to 2 days a week. It keeps the site simple, and draws attention to the shortlist.
No result yet ???
By the way, I’ve already commented on the post itself, but I thought I ought to say what a great post “Kinda Rough” is, having hogged this comment box with loads of boring nuts-and-bolts stuff.
Hello! Good Site! Thanks you! xmjdtuholetjt
