In a break with tradition, we have decided to shortlist just two posts this weekend.

1. meish dot org: Another city, another event, another night alone in another hotel.

“I eye the array of garishly-coloured sliced meats and artfully-flavoured cheeses with a combination of suspicion and desire – old backpacking instincts die hard, and I’m tempted to make a sneaky sandwich using breakfast rolls, and smuggle it out in a napkin as my student self once did. But this is not that class of hotel…”

2. Orbyn Dot Elsewhere Dot Com: The book wot I (never) wrote.

“I could be plodding round Sainsbury’s pondering turkey twizzlers when suddenly I’d be awash with the kind of wooziness that strikes you when you’ve had about five pints too many, the room spins and throbs, and you have an urgent need to be sick in a hedge.”
