A Free Man In Preston: Once Upon A Time.
I’ve learned that melancholia will eventually go and bug someone else if you ignore it for long enough, but awkwardness is always with you, infuriatingly, unremittingly inappropriate, like having Noel Edmonds shagging your leg during a job interview.
Our judges said:
I think more people need to be in touch with their inner grump.
This post looks at how not everyone who wants to express a little creativity feels the need to make a spectacle of themselves, culminating in the line: “I trust my own judgement and there is no fucking way I’m going to do that.”

Brilliant choice - I loved that post
This is a great post.
But… eek, I haven’t visited this site for a few days, and I was assuming I could come back and see all the posts that were nominated last week - as I never got round to visiting them all. But it seems I can only see the winner? Surely not!
I’m just being dim, aren’t I… there must be a place I can go to see all previous nominations, as well as winners?
Aha!
OK, I was just being dim. I clicked Archives in the wrong place.
I’ve also added a link to last week’s shortlist, which contains 11 posts rather than the full whack.
UPDATE: The shortlist link should now automagically appear - although not (yet) on the archive pages..
I am A Free Man In Preston and I’ve come to collect my prize.
Thank you v. much, I’m feeling rather honoured.
What a splendid idea this is.
Ah yes, another well-deserved winner. The multi-layered, assured writing of A Free Man In Preston is a class apart from just about everything else I’ve come across online. And I’m not just saying that cos I’ve met him in real life and he’s a really lovely bloke to boot…
Although mind you, if people have time to read only one other post from the shortlist, they should definitely make it number four. I’ll say no more!
