    I’m not sure about that!!

I’ve met andre and love him to bits. I hope his book sells by the squillion. I’ll do what I can to publicise it on my own site.

BUT - this is the second book ad in the space of three weeks here on POTW. The post is only barely recognisable as a “post”, and I’m sure wasn’t intended as such.

There’ve also been nominations from sites I would personally regard as very commercial. Nominations quite possibly placed by agents.

The purist in me says, “don’t be a part of such ventures, Peter”. While the realist says, “wake up and smell the coffee, dude”. Or some such daft metaphor.

    What do the people think?

I would like to nominate some rather interesting writing about writing at Complicity.

  5. An Unreliable Witness

And in following on from that nomination for Complicity, I would like to nominate this post from My Mental Milkcrate, as something of a manifesto for those of us who don’t blog about what we had for breakfast and going shopping at IKEA over the weekend: Don’t edit this (Milkcrate Mix).

Well, as regards the possibility of “promo-noms”, as I have just christened them:

    1. Lest anyone should think otherwise, and to nip things in the bud: kate’s nomination at the top of this comments box is undoubtedly *not* a put-up job. I’ve chatted with kate often enough by e-mail to know that, and I’ve met Andre enough times to know that he wouldn’t try and orchestrate anything like that.

    2. It’s the shortlister’s job to evaluate nominated posts purely on the strength of the writing. Blatant promotional adverts would thus only get through if the quality was good enough - and if it *is* good enough, then fair dos, frankly.

    3. The number of clickthroughs than a non-shortlisted post receives, i.e. just by virtue of being in these comments boxes, is - and I know this for a fact - really titchy. So it’s scarcely worth the effort.

    4. In my judgement, for what it’s worth, this site has been remarkably free from promo-noms thus far, and I don’t as yet regard their *very* occasional occurrences as a matter of concern.

I’m nominating Geese Aplenty for sleep aid because writing about nothing much is tougher than it looks.

  9. Peter

Andre is a gifted writer and illustrator. Of that there is no doubt, and his book will do quite splendidly.

Nevertheless, I would like kate to inform us exactly what was so wonderful about that post that she thought worth nominating. Does it have any of andre’s signature brilliance? Why no. It is an advert for his book and other hangers-on, and that is what it is. And nothing wrong with that.

My points, of which this is only the latest example, are still quite valid, I feel.

    Granny dearest:

Must be their time, look, Zinnia has nominated a granny post too.

  11. andre

I have no idea why I am nominated.

I have no desire to pimp my book here.

    please delete me.

    thank you.

  12. Dandelion

Yeah, but, if it weren’t for that I might never have clicked on it, and discovered your absolutely genius blog. Eh?

  13. An Unreliable Witness

In the spirit of this continued debate, I nominate this rather eplsndid post for Post of the Week.

    Ahem.

  14. kate

Seems I’ve dropped a Bollok as usual!
    Thanks for your comments Mike,
OK Pete! Random Reading thats all.
I’m sorry Andre’ ( hopefully Mike will remove it for me?)

    I feel fooked now.

  15. MisssyM

I could nominate Gorilla Bananas every week.

This week I am nominating his post: “The Secret Policeman’s Earpiece” because it made me laugh out loud. Can’t seem to get the URL for the exact post but one scroll down will do it.

nominations! Please do tell me when I GET something right!

  17. Pink Pencils

    I made such a complete b*****ks
of doing this last time I’m a tad nervous
about sticking my head round the door once more.
    But what the hell,
Mr James and our honourable judges did us proud.
This made me laugh out loud today ( Tuesday 28th entry)
    and a note to self
to always be nice to waiters.
    Always.

Beautifully moving revelation about living up to others’ expectations of us, from Not Just Hiding.

  21. Peter

Hi kate. Can’t remember that. (Quite old.) Anyway - to preserve some harmony hereabouts I’ll be disappearing from POTW at the end of my current commitment. Seems best for all concerned. With no longer any involvement, I won’t get worked up about things.

Noting that you still didn’t answer my question. (Not that you’re under any obligation to do so.)

  22. asta

ob.blog for Stupid Gets a New Name.

  23. kate

    Hi Peter, Why disappear?
I made a mistake by nominating the Post to be quite honest, Sorry! it wasn’t till after I’d posted-I realized this (quote
    I’m not sure about that!!)
This is supposed to be Fun.

  24. JonnyB

I tried to post a comment on Tom’s post that Mike nominated, the one about the evils of big company marketing getting involved with blogs. Unfortunately, to post my comment, I was asked to sign up to an evil big company, and provide them with personal information to use in their marketing such as my postcode and date of birth.

    So I didn’t.

  25. Shortlist

    Ok.
    That’s all folks!

NOMINATIONS FOR THIS WEEK ARE NOW CLOSED.
The shortlist will be appearing soon.
