- Post of the Week #32
- Previous Winners : Feed
I know I’m a bit on the drag, but better late than never, right?
Plus this week’s was an extremely strong field, so coming to a final decision has been somewhat strenuous. Yet despite this, and after, ooh, minutes of painstaking contemplation, I can happily announce that this week’s winner of Post of the Week is…
Gentleman Ranters: I Knew Eric Wainwright
Oh yes, there are plenty who are familiar with the legend of Invisible Eric, the ghost of the Fourth Floor Features. But I doubt if any of them ever actually set eyes upon him. And fewer still who heard, first-hand, his explanation of why he found it necessary to wear his St James’s Street hat while seated upon the lavatory.
Our judges said:
“A great character sketch and an insight into a classic age in newspapers.”
“Now that’s what I call a proper anecdote. The Mirror appears to have changed a bit since those happy, halcyon days…and not for the better.”
“Reminded me of cricket, port, and enormous moustaches. Not in that order mind you, but fantastic when combined.”
Bravo JonnyB and Mike for nominating the winner!
Your shortlister this week was Asta, the judges were SwissToni, Patita and Supriya, and the head judge was me, Timbo. Woo for all of us!

Anna pointed me to it. It is she who should get the credit. She!
…and it was also Anna who pointed me to it.
Fair enough. She did Twitter it. But she didn’t come over here and nominate it. C’mon people, nominate, dammit.
I just noticed that I was nominated. I feel strangely honoured - thank you.
Yes, but I didn’t nominate it because I didn’t consider it to be a blog post, interestingly. I considered it to be a brilliant piece of writing in a weekly-updated magazine and something I was going to flag up on my site at some nearest opportunity, but didn’t think because of the nature of the site, it would qualify as a blog post.
Nice to see it recognised - but I wasn’t my dear Asta, being remiss, I didn’t think: Merely deciding that it wasn’t, in this instance a ‘blog’.
I loved that piece. It reminds me of some of the stories I used to hear from a (much older) colleague of mine about his time working at the Express in the heady Fleet Street days of the 60s and 70s. Apparently security was so lax that homeless people used to wander in the side entrance and stuff their faces in the canteen, before making off with the cutlery. And, from my own time at PA, I remember a drunk bloke wandered in in the middle of the night, plonked himself down in the news editor’s chair and nodded off. Not that anyone noticed…
